A Course in Algebra-E.

✏A Course in Algebra Book Summary : This is a comprehensive textbook on modern algebra written by an internationally renowned specialist. It covers material traditionally found in advanced undergraduate and basic graduate courses and presents it in a lucid style. The author includes almost no technically difficult proofs, and reflecting his point of view on mathematics, he tries wherever possible to replace calculations and difficult deductions with conceptual proofs and to associate geometric images to algebraic objects. The effort spent on the part of students in absorbing these ideas will pay off when they turn to solving problems outside of this textbook.Another important feature is the presentation of most topics on several levels, allowing students to move smoothly from initial acquaintance with the subject to thorough study and a deeper understanding. Basic topics are included, such as algebraic structures, linear algebra, polynomials, and groups, as well as more advanced topics, such as affine and projective spaces, tensor algebra, Galois theory, Lie groups, and associative algebras and their representations. Some applications of linear algebra and group theory to physics are discussed. The book is written with extreme care and contains over 200 exercises and 70 figures. It is ideal as a textbook and also suitable for independent study for advanced undergraduates and graduate students.

✏Integers Polynomials and Rings Book Summary : This book began life as a set of notes that I developed for a course at the University of Washington entitled Introduction to Modern Algebra for Tea- ers. Originally conceived as a text for future secondary-school mathematics teachers, it has developed into a book that could serve well as a text in an - dergraduatecourseinabstractalgebraoracoursedesignedasanintroduction to higher mathematics. This book di?ers from many undergraduate algebra texts in fundamental ways; the reasons lie in the book’s origin and the goals I set for the course. The course is a two-quarter sequence required of students intending to f- ?ll the requirements of the teacher preparation option for our B.A. degree in mathematics, or of the teacher preparation minor. It is required as well of those intending to matriculate in our university’s Master’s in Teaching p- gram for secondary mathematics teachers. This is the principal course they take involving abstraction and proof, and they come to it with perhaps as little background as a year of calculus and a quarter of linear algebra. The mathematical ability of the students varies widely, as does their level of ma- ematical interest.

✏A Course in Commutative Algebra Book Summary : This textbook offers a thorough, modern introduction into commutative algebra. It is intented mainly to serve as a guide for a course of one or two semesters, or for self-study. The carefully selected subject matter concentrates on the concepts and results at the center of the field. The book maintains a constant view on the natural geometric context, enabling the reader to gain a deeper understanding of the material. Although it emphasizes theory, three chapters are devoted to computational aspects. Many illustrative examples and exercises enrich the text.

✏First Course in Algebra and Number Theory Book Summary : First Course in Algebra and Number Theory presents the basic concepts, tools, and techniques of modern algebra and number theory. It is designed for a full year course at the freshman or sophomore college level. The text is organized into four chapters. The first chapter is concerned with the set of all integers - positive, negative, and zero. It investigates properties of Z such as division algorithm, Euclidean algorithm, unique factorization, greatest common divisor, least common multiple, congruence, and radix representation. In chapter 2, additional axioms about Z were introduced and some of their consequences are discussed. The third chapter sets up terminologies about polynomials, solutions or roots of polynomial equations, and factorization of polynomials. Finally, chapter 4 studies logically simpler algebraic systems, known as 'groups', algebraic objects with a single operation. The book is intended for students in the freshman and sophomore levels in college.

✏A Course in Linear Algebra with Applications Book Summary : This is the second edition of the best-selling introduction to linear algebra. Presupposing no knowledge beyond calculus, it provides a thorough treatment of all the basic concepts, such as vector space, linear transformation and inner product. The concept of a quotient space is introduced and related to solutions of linear system of equations, and a simplified treatment of Jordan normal form is given.Numerous applications of linear algebra are described, including systems of linear recurrence relations, systems of linear differential equations, Markov processes, and the Method of Least Squares. An entirely new chapter on linear programing introduces the reader to the simplex algorithm with emphasis on understanding the theory behind it.The book is addressed to students who wish to learn linear algebra, as well as to professionals who need to use the methods of the subject in their own fields.

✏A Course on Abstract Algebra Book Summary : This textbook provides an introduction to abstract algebra for advanced undergraduate students. Based on the author's lecture notes at the Department of Mathematics, National Chung Cheng University of Taiwan, it begins with a description of the algebraic structures of the ring and field of rational numbers. Abstract groups are then introduced. Technical results such as Lagrange's Theorem and Sylow's Theorems follow as applications of group theory. Ring theory forms the second part of abstract algebra, with the ring of polynomials and the matrix ring as basic examples. The general theory of ideals as well as maximal ideals in the rings of polynomials over the rational numbers are also discussed. The final part of the book focuses on field theory, field extensions and then Galois theory to illustrate the correspondence between the Galois groups and field extensions. This textbook is more accessible and less ambitious than most existing books covering the same subject. Readers will also find the pedagogical material very useful in enhancing the teaching and learning of abstract algebra.

✏A Course in Constructive Algebra Book Summary : The constructive approach to mathematics has enjoyed a renaissance, caused in large part by the appearance of Errett Bishop's book Foundations of constr'uctiue analysis in 1967, and by the subtle influences of the proliferation of powerful computers. Bishop demonstrated that pure mathematics can be developed from a constructive point of view while maintaining a continuity with classical terminology and spirit; much more of classical mathematics was preserved than had been thought possible, and no classically false theorems resulted, as had been the case in other constructive schools such as intuitionism and Russian constructivism. The computers created a widespread awareness of the intuitive notion of an effecti ve procedure, and of computation in principle, in addi tion to stimulating the study of constructive algebra for actual implementation, and from the point of view of recursive function theory. In analysis, constructive problems arise instantly because we must start with the real numbers, and there is no finite procedure for deciding whether two given real numbers are equal or not (the real numbers are not discrete) . The main thrust of constructive mathematics was in the direction of analysis, although several mathematicians, including Kronecker and van der waerden, made important contributions to construc tive algebra. Heyting, working in intuitionistic algebra, concentrated on issues raised by considering algebraic structures over the real numbers, and so developed a handmaiden'of analysis rather than a theory of discrete algebraic structures.
